Whenever I install any software, I find it extremely amusing when I get to the step of choosing the language and two options stare at me

  • English – UK
  • English – American

Amusing because we have several own versions of this language in this amazing country which boasts of 22 languages (do note – actually in reality there seem to be a lot more!); the most famous of them being Hinglish (infact there’s even a wiki page on it – do check it up!) – a mixture of Hindi and English. Go to the southern states and you’ll find more combinations such as Tamil & English, Malyalam & English, and similar are the conditions in the northern states as well.

Add our varying accents and talking styles, and we land up with the problem that an Indian from one of the northern states of India and another fella from one of the southern states, both of them proficient in their local versions of English and yet having issues understanding what the other fellow is saying! And you guys think the differences between UK & American English is a problem!

There is a very famous dialogue in Bollywood (Indian film industry) of the movie Namak Halaal

I can talk English, I can walk English, I can laugh English, because English is such a funny language. Bhairo becomes Byron because their minds are very narrow. In the year 1929 when India was playing Australia at the Melbourne stadium Vijay Hazare and Vijay Merchant were at the crease. Vijay Merchant told Vijay Hazare – Look Vijay Hazare, this is a very prestigious match and we must consider it very prestigiously. We must take this into consideration, the consideration that this is an important match and ultimately this consideration must end in a run.

In the year 1979 when Pakistan was playing against India at the Wankhede stadium Wasim Raja and Wasim Bari were at the crease and they took the same consideration. Wasim Raja told Wasim Bari, look Wasim Bari, we must consider this consideration and considering that this is an important match we must put this consideration into action and ultimately score a run. And both of them considered the consideration and ran and both of them got out.

Even though the above dialogue is in proper English from a linguistic & grammatical sense, what makes the scene extremely delightful is the accent and the manner in which it is spoken. (Do give the video a watch out here from 1.16)
